Secret Messages (Microsoft Project)
Does information in the future have to be obvious or will it only be disclosed to the person of interest?
Telling a secret or something really personal involves the presence of the other rather than communication over the phone. Through a surface that connects people it would enable communication and would need the personal approach of taking care of interpreting or reading the information like a relationship needs to be cared about. This project explored how a secret can be passed on in a tactile way through a secret language that works through space and time and creates a shared experience.
To embed code in a hidden way, would enable a message to be read only under certain circumstances: knowing the person supports understanding the code. Embedding secret codes in textile lead to pleats. Pleats are common in clothes and in interiors, they act as surface to reveal and deceive from a pattern or a shape of the clothing piece. The code can be pursued in the pattern or in the surface structure. The writings or drawings within a pleat sequence are only visible from a certain angle, which makes the personal connection to another person possible. This happens through a rasterized pattern which takes into account which dots (or pixels) are seen when the unrecognizable writing on the flat surface is folded.
